CUSD Distance Learning + Reopening School Survey
Posted 5/22/20

Dear CUSD Families,

As we work towards closing this school year and prepare for reopening schools after summer break, we invite you to complete this short survey to provide input on Distance Learning and models for reopening school in the fall. Please note that each grade level includes the same survey questions and you may take the survey for each student in your family.

This data, along with any local or state guidelines or mandates, will help staff in developing options to support families and students for the 2020-21 school year. Our intention, as we stated earlier this week, is to open school on August 18, 2020, as previously scheduled. We look forward to providing an update on re-opening plans at the June 17, 2020 Board Meeting.

In addition to the programs and curriculum we provide at our local neighborhood schools, we also offer alternative educational models for families who may wish to participate in-home or virtual school (or a hybrid of home and classroom learning). I have included information on Capistrano Home/Virtual School and California Preparatory Academy for you below.

Capistrano Home/Virtual School (K-8)

Capistrano Home/Virtual School (CVHS) is dedicated to helping all students achieve their potential through academic and personal growth by offering high-quality alternative educational opportunities for K-8 students in Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD).

Families that enroll their children in CHVS for the 2020-21 school year have various learning options. For example, middle school students can be 100% enrolled at CHVS, or dual-enrolled at their resident CUSD middle school and CHVS at the same time.

If you are a parent/guardian and interested in having your child attend Capistrano Home/Virtual School for the 2020-21 school year, click here to watch an online Preview information video and then complete the online Student Information Form.

California Preparatory Academy (High School)

California Preparatory Academy (Cal Prep) is a WASC-accredited, independent study high school established through the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD). Cal Prep has the benefits and flexibility of a virtual curriculum blended with face-to-face instruction and highly qualified CUSD teachers. The advantages to a blended educational program through Cal Prep include the following:

  • Cal Prep students have access to UC/CSU approved coursework.
  • Cal Prep students have individualized instruction by CUSD teachers.
  • Cal Prep students can participate in CIF sanctioned sports at their home high school.
  • Cal Prep students have more flexibility when it comes to completing school work.
  • Cal Prep students can dual-enroll at their home high school. Students may take one or two classes at their home high school while they are enrolled at Cal Prep.
  • Cal Prep students can participate in co-curricular activities at their home high school. Some of these co-curricular events may include drama, band, newspaper, and yearbook. Audition and try-out requirements apply.
  • Cal Prep students will learn essential 21st Century Skills.
  • Cal Prep students have different pacing options that include Advanced Placement (AP), honors and accelerated courses, as well as credit recovery.
