Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test INFORMATION for CURRENT Grade 5 Students (UPDATED 8/15/19)

All Capistrano USD Grade 5 students will be administered the Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test in their classroom on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

Both an email and a letter will be sent to the parents of incoming Grade 6 students during the week of June 29 - July 3, 2020 with their child's Math 7 Accelerated Placement Testing results.  Students who did not pass or did not take the Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test on April 30 will be enrolled in a Math 6 class to start the 2020-21 school year.  If a parent is comfortable with his/her incoming Grade 6 child being placed in Math 6, no additional placement testing is needed.  However, beginning on July 3, 2020, a parent may register his/her child to take/re-take this the Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test to determine if their child qualifies to skip Math 6 and enroll in a Math 7 Accelerated class.

All Math 7 Accelerated placement testing for incoming Grade 6 students will be administered on Wednesday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 28 at 9 AM, 12 noon and 3 PM at the Capistrano USD office (33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano) in the Board Room.  A maximum of 90 students can be accommodated per date/start time; reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  No other testing/re-testing dates or start times will be available.  Incoming Grade 6 students who pass the Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test on July 22 or July 28 will be placed in a Math 7 Accelerated class to the start of the school year.  Students/Parents will be notified of the child's Grade 6 math course placement (either Math 6 or Math 7 Accelerated) at the child's middle school registration.

Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test details:
The Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test consists of forty multiple choice questions and three “Written Response” questions.  Students will have 45 minutes to answer the forty multiple choice questions, then 15 minutes to answer three “Written Response” questions.

Approximately one-fourth of the 40 multiple choice questions will be Non-Traditional Selected Response (NTSR) questions for which there will be multiple correct answers for each of these types of questions.  The number of correct answers to be chosen for each NTSR question will be explained in the directions.  All correct answers must be selected by the student for an NTSR question to be marked correct; no partial credit will be given for these types of questions. For example, for a question such as, "Choose the two answers that apply:  8 + 2 = _____    (A) 4 + 6   (B) 7 + 2  (C) 5 + 5  (D) 1 + 10", both (A) and (C) must be selected for this question to be correct.

To qualify to enroll in Math 7 Accelerated in Grade 6, students must score EITHER (1) 80% or higher on the multiple choice section of the test OR (2) 70-77.5% on the multiple choice section of the test AND 70% or higher on the "Written Response" section of the test.

A previously-administered Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test is available for download by clicking:

Sample "Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test"
Note: The sample test does not include any Non-Traditional Selected Response questions.

IMPORTANT: Student performance on this sample test will not necessarily correlate to performance on this year's Math 7 Accelerated Placement Test as this year's assessment will have completely different questions aligned to the Grade 6 standards (along with a small number of questions addressing addition and/or subtraction of fractions, which are taught in Grade 5).
