The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is also administered by Educational Testing Service. Concerned about the number of requests of able and talented high school juniors and seniors in the 1950s to enter college early, The College Board convened a task force to study the matter. The task force recommended the implementation of a series of college courses taught by high school teachers at the high school campus with a nationally-normed examination administered, for a fee, to determine student mastery and the awarding of college credit. Today, over 900,000 students attempt over 1.5 million AP examinations spanning 30 different subjects.
