Graduation Requirements


District requirements for high school graduation ensure that students are properly prepared to pass the California High School Exit Exam.


Grades 9-12: 220 Semester Credits required for graduation (each semester course = 5 credits)


  • English—40 credits
  • Social Science—30 credits, including 10 credits World History, Geography and Culture (Grade 10), 10 credits U.S. History, 5 credits American Government, 5 credits Economics
  • Mathematics—20 credits (Grades 9-10): Completion of Algebra I, Algebra IA/IB, or Applied Mathematics I/II is required to graduate
  • Science—20 credits, including biological and physical sciences
  • Foreign Language or Fine Arts—10 credits
  • Physical Education—20 credits
  • Health—5 credits
  • Reading—5 credits Reading Skills Development (Grade 9, only if a student did not score a 228 RIT or higher on the CORE Reading Level Test)
  • College & Career Planning—5 credits
  • Electives—Students must select an appropriate number of elective courses needed to complete 220 credits.


Each high school has a curriculum guide available that provides details on course offerings.


While these requirements will meet District graduation standards, Capistrano Unified strongly encourages all students to pursue a schedule of academic courses that meets the “a-g” course admissions requirements for the University of California and California State University systems.
